Engaging Community Toolkit

At Berkana, we believe that community is the best resource to get through difficult times. We support the rediscovery of community. This is why we have joined with Neighborhood Centers Inc. of Houston to create this rich and multi-faceted toolkit. It contains a variety of approaches for engaging community: information and processes in a variety of media, in both English and Spanish. We want to make it possible for every community–large or small, defined by geography, ethnicity, beliefs, shared pain or shared opportunity–to know how to engage their members to resolve current challenges and create the futures they desire. The Women’s Circle Kit is designed for women interested in starting a Women’s Leadership Circle, as well as women who wish to dive into the conversations and inspiration from Berkana’s Women’s Leadership Revival Tour. We know the experience of calling a circle and exploring the gifts and power of women’s leadership is frequently one of joyous discovery, great companionship and encouragement. We know the unique gifts of women’s leadership are deeply needed at this time. We celebrate how women everywhere are stepping more deeply into their leadership and into service. Know you are in good company as you consider starting a circle, women all over the world are doing the same: taking time for reflection, learning, and planning the wise actions that will make a difference in their organizations and communities. This Circle Kit contains an abundance of resources to support Women’s Leadership Circles.

Articles

Article Sets

An essential part of Berkana’s mission is to make our learning visible so that others can apply new ideas in their own organizations and communities. In our effort to reflect on what we are learning and illuminate these reflections, Berkana has developed a series of short articles on topics related to living systems theory, emergence and the process of building healthy and resilient communities. The booklets are valuable tools for individuals working in a range of contexts, from community organizers to professors and consultants. Our current set of articles includes:

“Enspirited Leadership: Landmarks for Uncertain Times”
by Bob Stilger

“Lifecycle of Emergence: Using Emergence to Take Social Innovation to Scale”
by Margaret Wheatley and Deborah Frieze

“From Hero to Host: A Story of Citizenship in Columbus, Ohio”

“Alive in Community: Designing and Hosting Transformative Gatherings”
