Letter from Debbie
Recently, I’ve been hoping to discover terminal velocity when it comes to email. The better I get at managing the deluge, the faster it pours in. In fact, a friend of mine said his inbox was so overloaded that the only way to get his attention was to text message him to let him know I’d sent an email.

We seem to be in a state of acceleration. Life is moving faster and faster, and the volume of commitments we find ourselves in seems to be outpacing our capacity to deliver. Is anyone else noticing this?

I bring this up because I’ve realized that perhaps this state of affairs isn’t going to change any time soon. Somehow, in the face of all this speed and intensity, we have to find a way to go slow. We have sit down with each other and listen to story—the long-winded version with nuance and subtlety, rather than the 60-second soundbite. We need to nourish ourselves with silence and reflection, with conversation and friendship.

Most of us who read this newsletter believe that community is the active ingredient in creating lasting change. How strange it is that we so often forget that speed and efficiency are not the key ingredients of creating community.
Gather With Us In Greece
Greece is a land of myths and archetypes—a perfect backdrop for exploring the historical impact of patriarchal cultures on women, and how this has shaped our world today. The Berkana Institute and Axladitsa-Avatakia learning center are calling a unique women’s learning retreat in Greece from September 20-28, 2008. Located in Greece’s beautiful Pelion peninsula and surrounded by the inspiring beauty of a coastal olive grove, we will invite you to explore your distinct calling, inspire you into courageous action, claim your power as a leader, and renew your energy.

Women's Leadership Revival Tour
Women all over the world—in villages, governments, organizations—are stepping forward to offer their leadership in service to the issues most affecting their communities. Though their lives vary greatly in material resources, they each are providing the gift of their leadership. The impact of women's imaginative, caring and generous leadership is visible all over the world. Join Margaret Wheatley for a stimulating inquiry into how women can step forward in service to our communities. The Women’s Leadership Revival Tour is coming to a city near you, including Toronto on April 2, Vancouver on April 29, and Boston on June 18.

Community Reflection
Zimbabwe is a riding the edge of collapse. Rolling power outages, unstable currency, natural disasters and water shortages are only some of the challenges facing this Southern African nation. Yet, in the midst all of the chaos, people in Zimbabwe are discovering their own resilient spirits. As formal systems dissolve, inventive and life-affirming alternatives to these systems are emerging. Jackie Cahi of Kufunda Learning Village shares a glimpse of life in Zimbabwe today, and how she stays balanced while living with one foot in each of the two worlds of collapse and creation.

Community Events
The web of communities that touch the work done in and around Berkana always has a lot of activity. The Learning Centers that participate in the Berkana Exchange are often gathering people together for dialogues and inquiries, as are our learning partners. To highlight a few: In Greece, Axladitsa-Avatakia has a series of events starting with Tending Earth, Tending Self in March, The Art of Protection in April and Strategic Presencing with the Tarot in May. In Canada, The Shambhala Summer Institute invites us to connect with individuals at the leading edge of organizational and social innovation from June 22-28, 2008. Find out more about these organizations, their programs and how you are invited to be involved.

The Berkana Institute connects and supports pioneering, life-affirming leaders around the world who strengthen their communities by working with the wisdom and wealth already present in its people, traditions and environment.

We define a leader as anyone who wants to help, who is willing to step forward to create change in their world. And we know that the leaders we need are already here.

We invite you to join us on this journey
